It is through these unique programs that people are discovering a healthy and sustainable way of living, a sense of purpose and dignity, and most importantly the hope of Jesus! With each new day in Kenya, countless lives are being transformed for now and for eternity! Isn’t that amazing?! To God be the glory!

Read: “From notorious brewer to notorious for Jesus”2013 was a game-changing year for ELI; the Lord disrupted our plans and strategy by opening the door to bring hope and empowerment to dangerous moms. Ruth was the most notorious brewer in her village. Her name was posted at the chief’s office as the “most wanted criminal.” A deal was struck, and in exchange for jail time, she could be trained in alternative business skills. If she stood firm and did not brew for six months, her record would be wiped clean. Ruth attended a five-day training at Empowering Lives International’s training center near Eldoret, Kenya. Not only did she learn how to bake bread, raise chickens, plant a tree nursery, grow passion fruit, and start bookkeeping records, but she also learned that she was made and loved by God Almighty. Along with 42 other women, Ruth gave her life to Christ.
She returned home, destroyed her brewing equipment, and picked up a shovel. She worked her land and planted the beginnings of what is now a six-acre diversified agribusiness. For the first 18 months, she was a day laborer who would dig ditches and level hillsides under the hot equatorial sun for other farmers and families. She committed before God and her community that she was done brewing. Five years later, she is now the sitting chairperson among 27 elected community elders. She is in charge of 5,000 people, runs six different businesses, has helped plant multiple churches, and leads women’s groups of current brewers who want to follow in her footsteps. From the most wanted and notorious criminal to the most wanted and sought-after motivational speaker in the region, Ruth’s story and the multiplied impact she’s having are changing the course of history for thousands of families.
Years after this door of evangelism was opened to reach these wanted criminals, ELI started to see the need to help the children of these brewers who have grown up under the influence of alcoholism and addiction. A program called “Give a Child a Chance,” similar to a one-day VBS outreach, was started. Our teams now focus on building relationships with families in communities through home visits, weekend outreaches, hosting pre-training in the villages, ministering in churches, and so much more—all in order to see village-wide transformation. You are a part of this change that is rippling through villages bringing hope, grace, and empowerment.

Poverty convinces thousands of people every day to make devastating decisions. The choices they face plunge them into an abyss of emotional, spiritual, physical, and often social regret.
Many who supply illegal brew believe the lie that brewing and selling changa'a can be a quick fix to a bad financial situation. Those who demand it find themselves trapped in a demonic cycle of avoidance, pain, shame, and addiction.
Here is an unbelievable God story of how God redeemed Gladys and Robert through supplying the biggest need of their lives with His freedom and released a hope to their village by creating a whole new demand.

There are few things as rewarding as knowing you are making a concrete difference in the lives of people in need. These powerful testimonies of transformation are so real and evident in Africa that several village chiefs and government officials have undeniably stated that the ELI training and approach “is a gift from God.” Families are coming out of addiction and illegal brewing by the hundreds and a wave of change is in motion. Hundreds of women who were illegal brewers of changa'a (meaning “kill me quick”) now go by the title “Women of Change.” Be encouraged by this video, knowing that these few testimonies are being multiplied by the hundreds because of the prayers and support of friends like you.
Reflection Questions: What did you learn that you may not have known before? Why do you think these people are so passionate about reaching out to others? How might God be calling you to be a World Changer right where you live? What might this look like in your homes, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods?
Chapati is another staple food in Kenya and a business-making recipe! It is a type of unleavened flatbread. In the US we would find that chapati is similar to Indian naan bread or a thick grilled flour tortilla. Chapati, like the tortilla, is delicious when dipped into things like stews, soups, or our favorite, freshly picked from the tree, mashed up avocados!

Bonus Challenge: Change the course of life for impoverished children and their families!
Ever feel the weight of life on your shoulders? In Africa, the weight of poverty becomes literal to thousands of women who have turned to brewing and distributing illegal alcohol in 3 to 5 gallon containers weighing from 20 to 35 pounds! Some carry the toxic liquid for miles on rough pathways at night to avoid being caught and arrested by the police. It is punishing work that also brings devastation to those who end up drinking the brew. But . . .
You can change the course of life for one of these families! In solidarity with these women we can lift the burden and carry the weight—literally in this challenge! This October, take the Carry the Weight challenge and launch your very own campaign to raise awareness and finances to fight poverty and provide HOPE for generations of families. We invite you to be a part of the change and help empower those who are trapped in generational cycles of poverty. We have seen thousands of burdened women and families set free to live a completely different and better life that impacts them and those around them for now and eternity.
At the end of the virtual trip you will have the opportunity to express your interest in and ask any questions about participating in this unique challenge. Our teams are prepared to assist you in your campaign in the weeks to come.
Join us at 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) for a conversation with ELI’s Women of Change. Gain hope as you hear the stories of transformation straight from women like Peris, Ruth, and Julia. God has significantly changed each one of these women. Once known as carriers of darkness, they carry hope and the light of the world with them as they travel to villages and preach the gospel to all who would hear.
*Please test your link at least 30 minutes before the conversation. We will be utilizing Zoom for all LIVE events. Our conversation will last approximately 60 minutes.
