Karibu (Welcome) to day 3 of your journey!

We hope you are discovering along the way that while the sights, sounds, and tastes of Kenya may be different than anything you have experienced, a shared love for Jesus and the people of this world unites our hearts together. Were you able to try some of the flavors of Kenya? Each of the recipes highlighted are dishes that are daily being consumed and enjoyed by our friends in Kenya.

At the heart of all God is doing through Empowering Lives International is the mission to “Empower orphans and families to crush poverty, embrace Christ, and share their transformation with others.” People for the first time in their lives are being given the knowledge and tools to provide for their families. But more importantly, as they anchor their lives to His truth, they are discovering deep healing down to the very core of who God created them to be as they believe that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Today you will have the chance to take an inside look at the children’s homes of ELI, where God is at work in a mighty way. These precious faces represent stories of brokenness, but that is only a portion of the narrative God is writing in each of their lives. When God intercepts our paths, there is no amount of brokenness He can’t heal and we discover that even in the midst of hard times there is still joy to be found.

Watch: “Forever Family”

The number of orphans in East Africa is overwhelming, yet each one is known and loved by God. Each one has a name and a destiny.

Just like you weren't able to choose the family you are born into, children born into poverty don't get a choice. For so many of them, poverty takes away their chance at living a thriving life.

When we hear about a potential orphan, our staff conducts extensive research to ensure that no family member in the child's life can provide for them. It is customary for kids whose parents pass away to live with guardians or relatives; however, this isn't always possible. Once a child is confirmed an orphan, we take the slow and necessary steps to welcome them into our children's home, where they get instant love, provisions, siblings, education, and care that helps them socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Reflection Questions: What do you think it would be like for a child to leave their village and come into the children's homes? What questions and hopes do you think they have? From what you have learned so far about ELI programs, in what ways do you see that we together can help prevent children from becoming orphaned?

Take some time to pray right now for the more than 300 kids partners like you and ELI are providing with a forever home.

Watch: “From Orphans to World Changers!”

Gladys and Vincent are two children who suffered more during their childhood than anyone should in a lifetime. Each came from different families with different stories, but both experienced the trauma of first losing parents and then losing their hope in life. However, everything changed when a way was opened for them to come to the children's homes of ELI. Broken and resistant to love, their stories capture hearts and give us all a greater hope in Christ and His healing power through others. The love and ignition of one precious child will impact generations to come.

Family Corner

Zoom Zoom!

Here is a fun game that the children in Kenya love to play. It takes rhythm, coordination, and teamwork. Give it a try with three other friends or family!

Challenge of the Day: Explore life at the children’s homes virtually!

The care from all who sponsor and support the ELI Children’s Homes in Kenya provides so much more than basic needs. In addition to a home, education, food, clothing, and healthcare the children experience a flourishing community, counseling, and a dynamic spiritual life so they can thrive. Visit the links below to explore the children’s homes by using your mouse to experience it in 3D. (Note: these videos are available for viewing with VR goggles as well.)
Bonus Material: Make Ugali

Ugali is one of the main foods eaten daily in Kenya. It is consumed by the poorest as well as the wealthy and is a favorite of the children in the ELI homes in Kenya. Its main ingredient is maize or cornmeal, and it is served as a side alongside greens, stews, and proteins if they can be afforded. Ugali is relatively inexpensive to make and its very heavy texture has the ability to fill a stomach, making it a food of choice for poor families who can afford to feed their children only one meal a day.
