Overview

Jambo (Hello) and welcome (karibu) to your virtual trip with Empowering Lives in Kenya! We are grateful to have friends like you on this journey with us.

Take a moment to envision yourself with your feet resting on the red soil of Kenya. Feel the warmth of the African sun on your face; the intensity of its heat seems to linger. The grandeur of acacia trees marks the distant landscape, and the lush green foliage appears to spread like a blanket across the landscape as far as your eye can see. Listen to the sounds of the birds paired with the joyful songs & laughter of kids playing at the children’s home, producing a sweet melody that seemingly floats on the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. The clap of thunder and menacing clouds beyond are sure to bring rain, so let’s head for a place of cover and get started.

Watch: “A Journey to Africa”

This is where your journey begins! With your packing list in hand, get ready to embark on a virtual trip around the world. This day is sure to be filled with many emotions. The uncertainty of traveling to an unfamiliar place is coupled with the anticipation of a new adventure. Kenya is a beautiful nation filled with some of the friendliest & most hospitable people you will ever meet who are delighted to welcome you into their country. Pray now that God would open your hearts to receive all He has for you this week!

Reflection Question: What are you most excited to learn about in the coming week?

Watch: “Together we are Igniting World Changers

Together with you, we develop and empower people to grow in leadership to promote grassroots change in their communities and influence higher powers to recognize and embrace where God wants to bring about holistic change. When you partner with ELI, you empower a community of people made up of a dynamic team of full-time nationals and Americans who have chosen to work together for the cause of sharing God’s love and Igniting World Changers among the poor.

Reflective Questions:
In the middle of the video Don says, “This partnership is Igniting World Changers.” What do you think that means and why is that such an important focus for empowering the poor?

Devotional

Tilling the soil of your heart

In Africa the majority of people are small-scale farmers. Like a farmer tills and prepares the soil before planting, these daily devotions are a choice you are making to set aside some time from the day's business to listen to your heart as you look at God's Word.

As part of day 1 (and other days if you like), begin the time by taking in this special 3-minute music video by Cee-Roo. Embrace the faces, sounds, and scenery, and then read the day 1 devotionkeeping in mind what you have just seen. By the way, when the video is ending, the group of children are singing a song in Swahili that you can memorize:

"Ainuliwe Bwana wa maBwana! Ainuliwe ametenda mema!" English: "Praise the Lord of Lords! Give praise for He has done good!"
Challenge of the Day: What time is it in Kenya?

Did you know that Kenya is either ten or eleven hours ahead of us (depending on Daylight Saving Time)? The sun rises at 6:30 am and sets at 6:30 pm every day of the year! That means that as you were getting out of bed this morning, maybe grabbing your first cup of coffee or enjoying that bowl of Cheerios, the people of Kenya were winding down from the day’s events getting ready for bed. Grab your smartphone or tablet and click on the clock icon. Next, click on “World Clock” and add Nairobi, Kenya. Set aside some time today to pray for the nation of Kenya. You might even make this a part of your daily quiet time.

Family Corner

The Flag of Kenya
Flags are so much more than something we see flying in the air. Flags are a country's way of portraying itself to the rest of the world and displaying a nation's pride and values. Often they represent the country's historical past, and the colors and symbols displayed help tell that story. Kenya's flag is black, red, green, and white, with a traditional Masai shield and white spears in the center. With the help of a parent, look up Kenya's flag and complete the coloring sheet. You can also look a little further to see what each color and symbol represents.
Bonus Material for Kids
Kids, did you know that Kenya is one of 54 countries in Africa? Do you know the capital of Kenya is Nairobi? There are so many fun and exciting things we can learn about Africa together! Inside your Experience Kit is a packet called "Passport to Kenya." There should be one for each of you! As you color the pages, you will learn about the animals, agriculture, and languages that make Kenya special! You are all so very special. We are excited to take this trip with you!

*Parents, we know spills and mistakes happen! Should you need an additional copy, download it safely and instantly below.

The common view of poverty in the world is often not the reality. Enjoy this fascinating glimpse from a different point of view!

Discuss or jot down some of your thoughts as you watch.
What new understanding have you gained?
Pay special attention to the last 20 seconds of the video (beginning at 4:13).
