John Yator
John Yator grew up surrounded by darkness. In his home village, Kabisaga, Kenya, both the brewing and drinking of alcohol shaped daily life throughout the community. What little income the family had was consumed by addiction, forcing John to take on responsibilities far beyond his years. By grade 11, John was balancing school with weekend work just to help his family survive.
Over time, this very cycle that he resisted began to pull him in. Alcohol became his escape, leading him down the same destructive path. After one drunken afternoon left him wandering home without dignity or hope, John knew something had to change.
Even as he did what he could to break free, pursued education, and eventually became a teacher, the cycle continued. Addiction returned, his family remained trapped, and the future he longed for still felt out of reach. Then came a turning point!
In 2015, John connected with Empowering Lives International. Through training, encouragement, and spiritual guidance, something finally began to shift—not just in his circumstances, but in his heart.
Step by step, light began to break through the darkness. John found freedom from addiction and his family was transformed alongside him. His mother stopped brewing. His father stepped away from alcohol. What was once a cycle of brokenness became a story of restoration!
“What the enemy meant for destruction, God has turned into a testimony,” John says.
Today, John stands as a restored man, grateful, free, and walking in purpose. His story is a powerful reminder that when one person encounters the light of Jesus, generations can be transformed.
