Milkah Jeptoo

Milkah was the firstborn in a family with 15 children, meaning she was lucky enough to be educated till tenth grade. Despite being brilliant in her academics, her education came to a halt because of her gender. Milkah’s father couldn’t waste the family's financial resources on her education. So his aspirations shifted to what he could get for her in a dowry within an arranged marriage.

Married off at 18, this was the beginning of Milkah’s tribulations in life. She was betrothed to Isaac, an alcoholic man who could not provide for himself, let alone a family. Milkah struggled to care for her five children and shield them from the realities of having an abusive alcoholic father.

Her family quickly became the laughingstock of their village. Nobody wanted to associate with them. For ten years, Milkah's daily life was filled with tears and suffering, until one day, she decided it was time to fight back and live for her five kids. Her fight started as she embraced the challenge of crushing poverty through ELI training. She started small by burning and selling charcoal, a job associated with only men, which earned her $3.00 a week.

Using the skills she learned about business and savings, Milkah invested part of her income from selling charcoal. Slowly, she started to acquire sheep, planted maize, leased ½ acre of her land, and established a tree seedlings nursery—all skills taught by ELI. When the maize was ready for harvest, Milkah launched a corn roasting business in a nearby market center along the road, earning her $10.00 a week.

While doing this strenuous work, she was undergoing physical and emotional breakdowns due to the harsh reality of her children still going to sleep hungry most nights. Her kids were even chased out of school for delinquent funds, all while still experiencing abuse from their father. Then, after many years of struggle, Milkah met Lynette, one of the ELI World Changers. It was this connection that allowed Milkah, along with 30 other women from her village, to learn about poultry and chicken management.

God ignited a greater hope, passion, and purpose within her from that day. Four years later, Milkah earns a God-honoring income from selling almost 2000 chickens annually. Milkah is thankful to God and partners like YOU for the transformation she is experiencing with her poultry business. The income earned has enabled her to educate her three youngest children through high school and college, a dream she could have never accomplished on her own.
God opened a door of influence for her when she joined the Family Hope training in 2021 with an opportunity to become a member of the Team of Change. Her signature introduction is, “I am a World Changer.” Twenty-two years later, she has shifted from a laughingstock to a stakeholder in her community.

Currently, she is training 50 women, teaching them about poultry and kitchen gardening. Through the Family Hope training, she gained the skills she needed to share her transformation and properly keep farm and business records, all while motivating and encouraging women at churches and home fellowships. Milkah is thankful to God for using her as salt and light in the world to reach people in her community. She prays that God will let her light shine and reach many people with His hope!

Milkah was determined to rise above the hardships of her role as a mom, and she did just that. Each time she attended an ELI training, it unlocked a piece of her God-given destiny, which included crushing the generational cycle of poverty for good.
