Phylis Chelagat
Phylis Chelagat, a vibrant 27-year-old and the eldest of five siblings, has a remarkable story that highlights the life-changing impact of the Women of Change (WOC) program. This program empowered her mother, Yvonne, to break free from the dangerous cycle of brewing and selling illicit alcohol. For years, Phylis witnessed the destructive effects of her mother's brewing business on their family, leaving a lasting impact on Phylis and her siblings.
After a decade of this life, Yvonne connected with ELI and was inspired by other Women of Change to leave her brewing business. This decision initiated a transformation for not only Yvonne, but the entire family! However, growth usually occurs through pain, and on the very day she quit, the police arrived and discovered illegal alcohol in their home. Out of fear, Yvonne fled and left Phylis to deal with the consequences. She was then arrested for the brewing and spent a month in jail as well as being fined 60,000 Kenyan shillings ($450 USD). Thankfully, Yvonne was able to gather the money for the fine and Phylis was released.
Through what seemed like endless chaos, financial strain, and total dysfunction, the family was finally starting over. With faith in the Lord, and support from ELI, positive transformation was beginning! Through ELI’s Business for Life program, Yvonne was able to leave her brewing business for good to pursue and achieve a God-honoring livelihood. She now has a thriving livestock farming business, a poultry keeping business, and does kitchen gardening to provide her family with steady and sustainable income. It is so amazing to see the positive impact these programs have had on their lives, and Phylis had this to share about what it has meant to her specifically:
Praise God for the way He has completely transformed the lives of Phylis and her family. Their mourning has turned to dancing, and we can’t wait to see where the Lord leads them next!
