James Chebobei

James Chebobei’s journey of leadership began 16 years ago when he was chosen to be an Elder within his village—later being promoted to assistant chief in Cheragan’y, Kenya. While working as a government leader, James was able to see firsthand the immense challenges plaguing his community, while also bearing the responsibility of overcoming them. At first, this task seemed utterly impossible. Local forests were being diminished entirely, businesses were suffering, and the village as a whole was struggling to thrive—but James never gave up!

With the help of other village leaders, and James’s decision to receive ELI training, things began to turn around. James was amazed at all he was learning about agroforestry and tree nursery establishment! He knew these skills could be used to restore his community—all he needed was a plan. This is when God gave James the vision to implement a reforestation program.



Following God’s lead, James began by planting 100 trees and establishing a nursery with 1,000 cyprus seedlings. But he didn’t stop there! James also distributed 10 trees to each village elder across the 70 villages that he oversaw as assistant chief. Because of his tenacious actions and bold faith, an average of 700 trees will be planted every year, replenishing the surrounding forests and restoring hope within the villages. James’s goal is to see 20,000 trees planted before he retires! He shared, “I know it is a small venture that I have initiated, but the Bible says, ‘Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,’ (Zechariah 4:10). I dream that when the leaders have implemented the program fully, they will also influence 10 households in every village to plant and manage 10 trees each year. This will help us restore the forest and get to enjoy the benefits of agroforestry. God bless ELI for the knowledge learned and for developing me as a World Changer!”
