Edna Maiyo
Years ago, a young girl named Edna Maiyo gathered five children under a tree along the banks of the Kipkaren River to tell Bible stories and sing songs. No microphone. No building. Just a heart on fire for God.
Growing up in Chebaiywo, Kenya, Edna knew the challenges of poverty and uncertainty. So, at age twelve, she gave her life to Christ—clinging to the hope that could overcome every obstacle before her. That moment launched her calling! She began teaching children wherever she could, planting seeds of faith that would grow far beyond what she imagined.
When one of Empowering Lives International’s founders, David Tarus, saw her potential, he offered her the chance to become ELI’s first sponsored student. Through ELI, Edna gained an education, but even more importantly, her ministry was nurtured. What started with five children grew into hundreds through the Nyumba ya Yesu (“House of God”) program, and later, the ELI Children’s Home.
With faithful mentorship, Edna became a trainer of trainers, equipping more than 100 Sunday school teachers who now reach over 3,000 children across Kenya. Today, she invests in teachers, organizes monthly outreaches, leads Vacation Bible Schools for hundreds, and walks alongside families as they discover wholeness in Christ. Looking ahead, Edna’s vision is to bridge the gap between Sunday school and adulthood by equipping youth and pastors to disciple the next generation with wisdom and strength.
Edna’s story—and many others like it—have been made possible because of friends like you! Your support of ELI’s Children’s Ministry is nurturing faith, restoring families, and transforming communities with the hope of Christ. Thank you for helping turn mourning into dancing and creating lasting impact for generations to come.
